  • Title
Interview with Mrs M F S Galloway, born 1911 and Mrs L M Bawden aged forty nine, (mother and daughter). The family moved to The Oddfellows Arms in Toddington around 1954. Mr Galloway kept his day job at Vauxhall. The pub is described as the oldest and busiest in Toddington due to the close proximity of the cement works. Reference is made to a previous owner of the pub who used to do plait work. Discussion also includes reference to chicken farm in the village. Regular customers included 'Ruggles', 'Smosher' and Jimmy Whitbread. Alterations to the pub after the family left are included which involved knocking the cottage down next door, and fitting a kitchen. Breweries of the day are mentioned, which were later taken over. Manor Crossmans became Watney's and The Oddfellows Arms, then a Wells & Winch pub was taken over by Greene King. Friends of the family included Mrs Marlow from the farm and [the Parrotts?] who lived at the post office, opposite the church and previously had a pub at Offley, near Hitchin.
