  • Title
Letter from J Atkinson, 15, Cork Street, Burlington Gardens, London W, to F S Bassett, Belvedere, Weymouth. Has always felt a difficulty in him approving of getting hold of a young man of scarcely 22 and marrying him against the warnings of hs parents. Will forward him a copy of his letter and the reply received. Quite agrees that Arthur's conduct in publishing the advertisment was unwise but there are 2 sides to it. She had run up bills of nearly £200. Flight from the house was a silly thing on Mrs Crisp's part, but best thing now is a separation deed which will not prevent them coming together again 'as they ought to do'. Can any parent of Mrs Crisp fail to see danger of leaving Arthur in London wifeless and homeless. Warned her mother against the marriage until Arthur could put something in settlement. Absurdity is plain - of deserting husband months after his last act of cruelty '..the interval being filled up with an endearing correspondence..' 23 August 1895 attached: copy of reply to above. After his letter got his niece to stay proceedings hoping that if writer and Mr Atkinson met, they might be able to bring about a separation by mutual consent, but she is going in for a divorce, so he must wipe his hands of the affair. Unable to reply before as was knocked down by a bicycle and rendered unfit for business 26 October 1895
