    The Bedford Society was formed in 1966. It was a registered charity from 1976 with a consitution adopted on the 11 March 1976 with the charitable objects of 1) To stimulate public interest in the area of Bedford 2) to promote high standards of planning and architecture in Bedford, 3) to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in Bedford. The charity was removed from the Charity Commission's listings in 2009 and all remaining funds transferred to the Bedfordshire Architectural, Archaeological and Local History Society, which was formed on 17 September 2008 following a merger of the Bedford Society with the Bedford Archaeological and Local History Society with the Bedford Society.
