Bedford Archaeological Society Collection

Bedfordshire Archaeological and Architectural Society was formed in 1847. It later amalgamated with two other societies; the Bedfordshire Natural History Society and Field Club (1888) becoming the Bedfordshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, and the Bedfordshire Literary and Scientific Institute and General Library (1890). However, it was not until 20 May 1914 (see X69/20) that the Bedford Natural History Society became styled the Bedford Natural History and Archaeological Society. 'Natural History' was dropped from the title sometime in the 1950s. (see X69/29-30). On 17 September 2008 the Bedford Architectural, Archaeological and Local History Society was formed after a merger of the Bedford Archaeological and Local History Society with the Bedford Society (established 1966).
