    Abstract of Title of Richard Norton to a farm at Sharpenhoe purchased by Hugh Smith (I) Marriage Settlement of 12 Dec 1654 - Luke, eldest son of Richard Norton to Ann Michell in which Richard Norton covenanted to convey to following uses: (a) Capital messuage called Stockwood and closes etc. appertaining: to use of Luke Norton for life, remainder to Lettice Norton, wife of Richard, for life, remainder to Luke Norton and his heirs; (b) Manor of Barton (except the Four Berry Dokes) to use of Luke Norton for life, remainder to heirs of Luke and Ann Norton, remainder to right heirs of Luke Norton; (c) three tenements called Clarke's, Peacock's etc. in Sharpenhoe, Streatley, Sundon, Samsill and Harlington; (d) [four?] closes formerly part of the Great Mead; (e) Busshy Hales Close; (f) tenement and orchard and two closes adjoining, Wood Close, 44 acres of arable in Streatley, Sharpenhoe and Sundon; (g) George's Wood; (h) Samsill Close, Westoning; (i) tenement in Luton in occupation of William Rotten; (j) messuage in Bedford formerly in occupation of Richard Fisher; (k) rent of £16 per annum out of Sharpenhoe Manor (c)-(k) to use of Luke Norton for life, remainder to Ann Norton for life, for her jointure, remainder for maintenance of children, remainder to sons in tail male Marginal Note: "This deed is not amongst the writeings, & if 'twas it relates to only part of the estate purchased of Richd Norton" (II) Recovery and Fine of Michaelmas 1654 and Easter 1655 of Manor of Barton, nine messusages, three dovehouses, nine gardens, 370 acres of land, sixteen acres of meadow, 120 acres of pasture, 26 acres of wood in Luton etc. (III) Luke Norton died without issue and the estate passed to his brother Richard, the settlement above could not be found "but the counterpart thereof [executed by the trustees] is in being and is in the custody of Richd Crawley Esq who purchased the Luton Estate" [see C250 in Crawley Archive] (IV) Post nuptial marriage settlement of 10 Oct 1677 between Richard Norton, brother of Luke and son of Richard and Ann, daughter of H.Hamson. (a)-(k) in (I) conveyed yo use of Richard junior for his life, remainder to Ann for her life for her jointure, remainder to Richard junior for life (V) Will of Richard Norton of Mitcham [Surrey] of 10 Aug 1686 noting that John Norton died without issue and the estate passed to his brother Richard
