Papers relating to the Ransom family of Hitchin and later of Kempston Mill. Many of these papers (marked '*') are those which were listed as being 'in the strong box at the time of Joshua Ransom's decease' (see X67/922). They deal with various activities of Joshua Ransom (1789-1863) and his son Edwin (1842-1927) [see BC 694] and include references to property in Hitchin and Kempston, investments, a savings scheme, and involvement in silk spinning at Hitchin in the 1820s. Many of the papers refer to or were written by Mary Radley who on the 1851 census has the occupation of governess [for Edwin] and on the 1861 census was described as an accountant. The family used two solicitors during the period, Hawkins and Co of Hitchin and T W and J Pearse of Bedford. For a description of Joshua's life see X67/867.
