Negative Collection of the Bedfordshire Times and other Bedfordshire County Press newspapers

When the Beds Times moved from Mill Street to new premises in Caxton Road in 1969 they left the bulk of their glass negatives behind having removed the 'more interesting' negatives. The County Record Office staff asked if the Record Office could have any they felt ought to be kept and the then manager agreed. Unfortunately by the time the CRO staff began work moving the negatives, some had already been destroyed. All the remaining, unbroken, negatives were brought to the Record Office. In addition to this various ill-advised attempts to weed the negatives were started at various times some by the staff of the Bedfordshire County Press and some by the Record Office. Fortunately none of these attempts got very far but it does mean that some negatives no longer exist.
Those glass negatives deemed to have been 'more interesting' and which moved with the Beds Times in 1969 were subsequently deposited with the Record Office (Acc 5324) and wherever possible have been returned to the main series.
The BTNegs collection includes photographs taken for use in the following newspapers: Beds Times, Bedford Record, North Beds Courier, The Ampthill News and the Woburn Reporter and some packets indicate the paper for which they were intended.

System of arrangement
The user will need to consult the original indexes in order to discover the negative number. this having been done the actual negative can be ordered by quoting BT Neg followed by the reference number. The series and items put onto ADLiB at present are only those which have been requested for copying they are in no way representative of the main collection.
