Sir John Buchanan Riddell (c. 1768-1819) was the 3rd son of Sir John Riddell, 6th Baronet of Ridell by Jane, daughter and eventual heir of James Buchanan of Sundon, Beds. John's two elder brothers (Walter 7th Baronet, and James 8th Baronet) both died in 1784 and John became the 9th baronet. He came into the Sundon estate after the death of his maternal grandparents (James and Jane Buchanan) and his uncle Archibald Buchanan left his mother Jane (d 1798) and her sister Rebecca as coheiresses.

'Sir,
I received your's 14 Int for answer, and I have examined the nine improvements made by Mr Buchanan & Mrs Buchanan From 1769 to 1773 & from 1773 to 1777. However, their is some of the Plantations hurt very much by cutting out some of the Trees. - I hope you will Excuse Errors in my Calculations, as I am not able to asertain to the real value, only by a near Supposition - 820£ & 477£ - 1297£ value
