  • Scope and Content
Hopes Hugh likes Lenham. Missed the announcement in The Times, but is pleased Hugh has everything he hoped for [the letter is written the day before Hugh's wedding]. Is supposed to be on active service in Landi Kotal, but it is a very light form of it. 'We are guarding the outskirts of the British Empire.' The chief trouble is from the 'lawless tikes' in the Kyber Pass who make occasional raids. Describes the camp and it's operation. Muirhead, who has been adjutant since they came out, has gone off to join the K.A.R. in East Africa. It is a great loss. Will not be coming home until May 1922. Would like t have got home this year, but would not be able to raise the money for the passage. Has opened a deposit account to save up. Will probably be doing promotion exam in October. Writer would like to play polo but it is too expensive. The colonel has 2 ponies and is very keen on polo. Went shooting last September with Muirhead. Is going with Middleton this year. Brief news of other acquaintances. Very sad thing has happened.; has to leave the rectory at Islip as it can no longer be afforded. Don't know yet when we go, it will depend on a smaller house in the village becoming vacant.
