Thomas McCelland was born 14 Aug 1892 at Sorbie, Garlieston, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was one of at least 8 children of Robert McCelland (b.1858, d.1928) and Mary Maxwell Adair (b.1861, d.1930)
Thomas McCelland married Anne Macaskill 9b. 1900, d. 1974) on 7 Aug 1925 at Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Anne was the daughter of Alexander Macaskill and Alexanderina, nee McKensie.
Thomas and Anne McCelland had three children:
1) Mary McKensie McCelland, b. 1926, d. 2020. Married Claude George Gladman. Children Carole Anne and Alasdair.
2) Robert McCelland, b. 1927, d. 2008. Married Julie A Osborne in 1952 and had children Iain, Andrew and Anne. Married Sheila Elizabeth Anstee in 1966.
3) Alice McKensie McCelland, b. 1931, d. 2010. Married Kenneth Sargison. 2 children.
Following the Second World War Thomas and Anne McCelland moved to Studham and farmed land belonging to Manor Farm [in the past, also known as Church Farm and Church End Farm]. Son Robert also worked on the farm, and the diaries also mention daughter Mary driving tractors and doing other farm work. She and her husband Claude Gladman later took over the farm. Robert later took a farm in Munden
The McClelland family first appear at Manor Farm on the electoral roll of 1948.
Henry T Gladman married Pollie Nicoll Q4 1912 at Studham church. Both Henry and Pollie were born in Studham. Henry and Pollie had at least 3 children:
1) Francis Lawrence Gladman, b. 11 Aug 1912. He married Esther H Allerton in 1941. He was a prisoner of war in Japan during World War 2. In 1954 Francis and Esther were living at 2 Southern Way, Studham.
2) Maisie Phyllis Gladman, b.16 July 1916. Married George A Hanna in 1954.
3) Claude George, Gladman, b. 5 Dec 1920, d. 2003
On the 1921 census, Henry is a ploughman, employed by Richard Hoar at Clements End Farm, Studham. The family were living at The Row, Studham.
In 1939 the family were at 4 Dunstable Road, Studham. Henry is listed as a keeper at the Zoological Soicity, Whipsnade, Miasie is a shop assistant and Claude a Carpenter.
In October 1945 Claude was living at 4 Dunstable Road, Studham.
Claude G Gladman married Mary M McClelland in June 1952.
They had two children:
1) Carole A Gladman, born 1953
2) Alasdair J Gladman, born 1958. Alasdair married Elizabeth F Bond in 1985
The diaries are undersood to be those of the McClelland family when at Manor Farm Studham, and were donated to Bedfordshire Archives by Alasdair & Elizabeth Gladman.
