    To Gertrude: Thanks for pencil case, which will be used a lot in school time. Tomorrow is going to the picnic. Donnie and the writer will be the only small ones there, so does not expect to enjoy it, but could not refuse as was asked there first. Willie had mentioned shooting, but did not say new year's day till yesterday. Would prefer to go shooting with Willie. Mary Anne Manning has an abcess on her knee and cannot walk. Charlie and Michael have left have left. Charlie and his brother are coming to school, but not to board. Visit of Mr Phillpott. To Katie: Thanks for Christmas present. Had to get a hammer and chisel to open the tin. Mr Woodford and Mr Richies went to see Papa off. Mr Richies gave Herbert a paper knife. Comments about the giving of presents. Comments about a photograph.
