  • Scope and Content
Sends Michael's letter 'which seems to indicate plenty of healthy activity and no undue pre-occupation with Hitler's little international party.' The GPO is shut, so trying to get the message about Friday through by 'phone. Pleased the oboe has turned out to be a good instrument. Does not see Pamela's engagement in The Times today; wonders when it will be printed. Beefsteak last night was terrible. Had a letter from Mr Potter today - still no explanation or apology for the situation he had allowed to arise. Reference to the 'Lady Smith-Dorrien thing' [She was known for setting up the Lady Smith-Dorrien's Hospital Bag Fund.] Is a little sad that nothing has come out of the village for the members of this Home Counties Division. Was touched to recieve at Christmas a little packet of cigarettes and good wishes from the British Legion at Sandridge. Here the Home Counties Division headquarters are 'nobody's children.' Wonders why no one in the village added the writer's name to the list of those serving their country. Not a single meeting of the PCC since the outbreak of war. 'I suppose they all think because we keep cheerful we've got chushy 'jobs' in the army. There's one grand thing about being in the army. They're all working hard, they're all helpful, they're all doing theor damnedest in spite of unbelieveable difficulties of supply and equipment to prevent anyone being let down..... Lots of us see our jobs being captured by other people,' Thanks for the muffler. Comments about the funeral of a VAD. The King had an air display over Yeovil this afternoon. Comments about the village of Barwick and the people there. Is prepared to accept the cost if Cecil thinks a course of treatment with the orthopedist would help.
