  • Scope and Content
Thanks Hugh for letter. Comments about the Battle of Loos, 25 September. The English did not manage to hold any of the ground they advanced over; they were back in the English front line trench by the afternoon. The whole operation was like Neuve Chapelle over again only on a much larger scale. 'We now seem to be shut down for the winter on a line which is practically just the same as it was twelve months ago. Has been hoem on leave for a week. Saw Cara every day; spent 2 day at Cliston and one at Richings Park. Had 2 dinner parties and went to the theatre. Other officers have been on leave so writer has been busy as acting adjutant, mess president and secretary and company commander. Arthur Russell was twice wounded on 25 September; one arm and one leg. Is now beginning to hobble about again. George Wilkins is joining the ASC. Jack Russell is a chief petty officer and runs four shifts a week of a searchlight on the roof of the White Star office.
