- Scope and ContentCongratulations on being made a C.F. Imagaines Hugh has a rank of captain, and when he moves into active service will get a grant for camp kit and field allowance. Advises Hugh to enquire closely into allowances as you do not get them unless you claim. The adjutant has left the battalion to join the corps John was with in September. John has taken on his work. The announcement of John's engagement is to be in The Times on 18 Janaury. The next thing to do is to get a house and furnish it. Does not think he will be many months longer unmarried. Father seems to be getting much better in Devonshire, but it is a really slow business. Has been managing Turvey from France for 5 weeks, now armed with a power of attorney, and has stirred up most of the delicate questions connected with it. One letter went to Uncle Charlie about sharing the costs of the transfer of mortgage, and a curt answer came back. A letter on the same subject to Uncle Horace and is awaiting reply before tackling Charles again. Has arranged continued letting of the Abbey and stirred up Alston about money he owes. Three years accounts are also now balanced.
