Carlton had a Memorial 'hut'. This was an old army hut, made of wood, in the High Street, which opened in November 1920 to commemorate those who served in World War One. When, in the late 1960s early 1970s it was decided to build a new school in Carlton it was fashionable to build schools which could also be used for other purposes. The village hall was therefore a joint project between the village hut committee or trustees, Bedfordshire County Council (as the Education Authority) and, because the school was a church school, the Diocese of St Albans. The new school opened in 1973. The idea of a shared hall has its disadvantages, agreement with the County Council became a long running saga.

Archival history
Kept by one of the long-serving secretaries of the committee, and with permission of the trustees deposited with Bedfordshire Archives by his widow in 2024.
