To the Chairman and Justices of the Bedfordshire Quarter Sessions. Your Worships, On behalf of the Committee of the Bedfordshire United Temperance Council. I have been requested to convey to Your Worships their most hearty thanks for your far-reaching policy of imposing for 1919 the Maximum Levy for Compensation purposes. We also wish to express to you our opinion that, in view of the great need for a still further reduction of redundant licences in the County, it would be wise to again enforce the same Levy for this year. At the same time specially using the various Licensing Benches of the County to use to the full this opportunity of Reforming a larger number of really redundant houses for Compensation than they did in 1919. We are anxious not to take up your valuable time with a lengthy statement of the position of the County with regard to this aspect of the question but relying upon Your Worships intimate knowledge of the actual state of things in your various Divisions, we simply state that, according to Lord Peel’s carefully considered estimate of the real requirements of our County we still have over 450 redundant licenses. The Trade, owing to the large profits made during the War and to the reduction of taxation in other ways can well afford to still pay the Maximum Levy, and we, therefore, most respectfully urge your Worships to again enforce it for the present year.
