Thomas William Gibson was born in April 22nd 1852 at the Rectory of St Mary’s Abchurch, in the City of London. His father, Robert Bowness Gibson, was the Vicar of St Mary’s at the time. His mother was Ann Gibson (nee Hepworth).
Thomas studied at St John’ s College Oxford.
Thomas became a Classical master at Charterhouse in 1876. He received a salary of £200 for this appointment.
In 1882 he married Frances Georgina Curry and became Vicar of Stevington church, Bedfordshire, then in the diocese of Ely.
Frances Georgina’s father was George Curry who stayed on as Master of Charterhouse when the school moved out of London in 1872. He headed the Charterhouse foundation in particular ‘Sutton’s Hospital for men”. George was on the Board of the Societies for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge and for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, at the Board meetings of which he constantly presided. He was Treasurer of the Clergy Orphan Corporation”. In several of these charitable positions he was succeeded by his son-in-law Thomas Gibson.
In 1888 Thomas moved to Great Staughton Magna in Huntingdon.
In 1894 Thomas moved to St Sepulchre , City of London, to be Vicar .
In 1903 he moved to St Giles, Oxford and finally in 1909 to All Saints, Cranham, Essex.
Thomas and Frances had nine children: - Barbara (1883), Mary (1884), Edmund (1886), Geoffrey (1887), Arthur (1889), Paul (1891), Olivia (1893) Robert (1895) and Andrew George (1897). Barbara and Mary were born at Stevington, Edmund and Geoffrey in Hampstead, Arthur, Paul and Olivia at Great Staughton and Robert and Andrew in the City of London. Robert Bowness Gibson was killed in France during the First World War. The donor is descended from Geoffrey Currey Gibson.
They built a house at Bexhill, (12 Dorset Road South) which was called “Great Staughton”. The house was used as a holiday home for the family.
Frances died in 1934 and Thomas died on Feb 23, 1937. Both were buried at Bexhill Cemetery.
