'How I should like to shake Johannesburg .... Alll the day long have stretched out my hands to a disobedient and gainsaying people'. Travelled to Heidelberg, Gauteng last Saturday but one, and received a chilly reception from the rector's wife, Mrs Urquhart. The next day trvelled on to a dingy mining town where he conducted a service for a 'cheery tho' small congregation.' Glad to hear that Oswald has got his commission [Oswald Edward Selwyn Bazeley] 'John [brother] has been twaeked by a German sniper but not seriously I'm thankful to say.
