- Scope and ContentThanks for letter and kind wishes for Mary [on her marriage to to Simon Ralph Fane Spicer 17 July 1923] Gordon is married. He commanded a submarine nearly all the time of the war and is now in command of the anti submarine school at Portland. His ship is PC73. Charlie joined the 4th Hussars aged 17 and was in France the last two years of the war. After the war he left the army and for 3 years has been in Alabama farming. He was badly stung be bees and had an operation to his back and not been fit for work. He wrote last week he was going to come home, which is a joy. Writer's husband [Charles] commanded the Royal Irish Battalion for 4 years, first in Salonika and then in Palestine. Writer and husband are all alone now, miss Mary dreadfully, but thankful she seems to have married into a very nice family who all love her. She is to live with her in laws for a year, then they will give them a house on the estate [at Spye Park, Chippenham]. Mary has known Ralph since 1918. She looked lovely as a bride - she is a tall, handsome girl and everyone admires her. Was interested to hear the Henrietta's boy [Nicholas] was married and has a daughter [Anne]. Forgets the names of Henrietta's daughters. 'The eldest was so very ill when we left Bedford. Asks if Henrietta remembers the Gordons, who now live near the writer. Their daughter Helen is unmarried and has been looking after her dying mother for the last months.
