Admin/biog history
The property in these deeds descends through the families of Dillingham and Boswell to Collett. It consists mainly of a mansion house in Upper Dean, with closes, and strips in the open fields.
In the early 17th century the Dillinghams were a family of some note. Francis Dillingham was on of the translators of the bible in the reign of James I and Theophilus and William were both Vice-Chancellors of Cambridge University. There is a monumental inscription in Dean Church to John Dillingham who died in 1670.
By one of the earliest deeds in this series, in 1646, John Dillingham of Tilbrook, yeoman, conveyed to Oliver Dillingham of Over Dean, yeoman, 19 acres in the open field of Melchbourne and Over Dean, as set out in an excellent terrier.
