  • Scope and Content
Mrs J Whitbread was a Trustee of the Lockington & Marsh Charities. The Charities were originally set up in 1730 by Mary Lockington and Blandina Marshe. These ladies gave the house known as "The Ladies Lodge" at Dunstable in their Wills to the trust they created on the condition that in each one of the six apartments should be "for ever harboured one poor maiden gentlewoman who should be upwards of forty years of age and descended of respectable parents." The charities' income originally came from Bedford farms, but by the time of this correspondence file all that remained of this land was several acres at Totternhoe, the maintenance of which is discussed in the Annual Reports. At the time of writing its value was estimated at £1,000. File includes: - Correspondence re Shewglie House Glenurquhart repair, 1978-9. - Accounts 1976-83 - Annual Reports 1976-83 (specifically regarding Charity owned land at Totternhoe). - Correpondence re vacancies at the Ladies Lodge 1978-80 - Recipients for Benefaction, 1982 - Correspondence re election of Trustees
