- Scope and ContentThe Jurors for Our Lord the King upon their Oath present that Reginald Joseph Brown on the fourteenth day of December in the year of our Lord One thousand nine hundred and twelve unlawfully knowingly and designedly did falsely pretend to Charles Henry Hyde that he the said Reginald Joseph Brown was then carrying on a genuine business as a hay straw and produce merchant and as such was in a large way of business and that he then was able to pay for large quantities of mangold wurzels as and when the same might be delivered to him by means of which said false pretences the said Reginald Joseph Brown did then unlawfully obtain from the said Charles Henry Hyde five tons of mangold wurzels with intent to defraud whereas in truth and in fact the said Reginald Joseph Brown was not then carrying on a genuine business as a hay straw and produce merchant and was not as such in a large way of business and was not then able to pay for large quantities of mangold wurzels as and when the same might be delivered to him as the said Reginald Joseph Brown well knew at the time when he did so falsely pretend as aforesaid against the form of the Statute in such case made and provided and against the peace of our Lord the King his crown and Dignity. 2nd Count And the aforesaid second count the Jurors aforesaid upon then Oath aforesaid do further present that Reginald Joseph Brown on the Twenty fourth day of February in the year of our Lord One thousand nine hundred and thirteen unlawfully knowingly and designedly did falsely pretend to John Jeffs that he the said Reginald Joseph Brown was then carrying on a genuine business as a hay and straw and produce merchant and as such was in a large way of business and that he was then able to pay for large quantities of carrot as and when the same might be delivered to him, by means of which said false pretences the said Reginald Joseph Brown did then unlawfully obtain from the said John Jeffs five tons and fourteen hundred weight to of carrots with intent to defraud whereas in truth and in fact the said Reginald Joseph Brown was not then carrying on a genuine business hay and straw and produce merchant and was not as such in a large way of business and was not then able to pay for large quantities of carrots as and when the same might be delivered to him, as he the said Reginald Joseph Brown well know date the time when he did so falsely pretend as aforesaid against the form of the Statute in such case made and provided and against the peace of our Lord the King his crown and dignity. Plea: Nor Guilty Verdict: Guilty Sentence: Three calendar months Hard labour to start from 26th June 1913.
