Title
History of T H Smith & Sons, Corn Merchants. The family were farmers at Tilbrook and when the railway reached them they started to get feed stuffs and fertiliser delivered by rail, ordering more than their own requirements and selling the surplus on. Some time before 1900 Thomas Smith decided that Bedford offered better rail facilites and moved to 41 Lansdowne Road, using part of the house as an office with warehousing rented from Midland Railway in Ashburnham Road. He died in 1934 and William Charles Knight became a partner along with the Smith sons. The business expanded and during the second world war it took over the business and premises of George Hallworth & Son of Duck Mill Lane. In 1964 these premises were sold and the firm moved to the Maltings in Lurke Street. In 1982 it moved to an office in Castle Lane and moved the seed cleaning machinery to Pavenham. By 1994 the business was working with O.C. Jewars Ltd of Bury St Edmunds.
