- Admin/biog historyCommunity health councils were established in 1974 to provide a voice for patients and the public in the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales. They were abolished in 2003 in England as part of the NHS Plan 2000. In Bedfordshire the councils were split into one for North and Mid Bedfordshire and one for South Bedfordshire.
- Archival historyThe material in this collection came into Bedfordshire Archives in three separate deposits. The first came in 1984 direct from North and Mid Bedfordshire Community Health Council and was originally catalogued as X685. The next deposit came in from the Bedfordshire Community Health Council in 2003 and contained minutes and papers of both the North/Mid and South CHCs - it was originally given the reference X909. Finally in 2008 the Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity donated minutes and papers of the North & Mid Beds Community Health Council, which were originally given the reference Z1344. When cataloguing began on the material received in 2003 and 2008 it was decided that it made most sense to amalgamate the three collections into one under a single reference.
