    1946 Bedford Victory Celebrations book commemorates the end of the Second World War, outlining notable events in Bedford between 1939 and 1945, including: The arrival of evacuees in September 1939, predominantly London school children, who were welcomed by Bedfordshire families; A performance by the Symphony Orchestra and the arrival of several broadcasting departments of the B.B.C. in 1941; The welcoming of American Allies, including B-17 squadron, Hell's Angels; and The visit of Her Majesty the Queen, Duchess of Gloucester, who made an inspection of the Home Guard. Content also recognises: A.R.P. wardens, fireguards, nurses and ambulance workers, who undertook training and made a large contribution to the war effort. In particular the Women's Voluntary Service and the Women's Land Army have been given commendation for their service, including a visit from Princess Elizabeth in February 1946. The Bedford Victory Celebrations book also includes a diary of the war years and an Official Programme of events, organised by the Victory Celebrations Committee, under Councillor J.A. Canvin.
