    Photograph of Ampthill and District Social and Cycling Club in fancy dress outside The George, Silsoe thought to have been taken by E Walker of Bedford. According to a newspaper report of 3 Aug 1897 the club 'just inaugurated' were in fancy dress for the Bank Holiday parades at Wrest Park where prizes were awarded for artistic 'get-ups' and grotesque exhibitons. 'After the second procession, which was an illuminated parade, the cyclists returned from Silsoe to Ampthill for dinner at the White Hart Hotel. The next day (Tuesday) there was a run "in costume" to Woburn Sands...a ride to Old Warden is fixed for August 17 and one to Bedford for August 31'.

    A note by H Grimmer explains The George at Silsoe was run by John Gray, son of John Gray of the White Hart Ampthill and gives some of the names and reminiscence of members of the club. H Grimmer’s identification attached to a photocopy of the photo shows George Grimmer, his son Albert Edw (AGU’s grandfather), Annie Swaffield (who married AEG), Herbert Grimmer (AEG’s bro), H.J.Woods, Norman Walker & Alfred (‘Pater’ to his children) Hetley of the Foundry. The newspaper cutting gives 'the names of some of the competitors with the characters they assumed'. In the front of the photograph is Mr Grimmer who came first in the grotesque displays as Robinson Crusoe.
