Scope and Content
Relates the case of William Friday a teacher at Sundon Board School in the 1880s whose use of the cane elicited complaints from parents. In 1888 he was prosecuted by the parents of Frederick Smith, convicted and fined. He was unable to appeal because the fine was too small but wrote to his MP seeking redress. The MP declined to interfere and the case stood.
