Transcripts of letters sent by William Sibthorpe to his wife Fanny after he joined the 1st Hertfordshire Regiment. At the time they lived in Bishops Stortford and later moved to Bedford. Posted to France September 1916, joined the 6th Somersets. By 1st October was in New End Military Hospital, Hampstead with rheumatism in his feet (trench foot). Includes account of a battle on16th September in which most of his regiment was killed and how he saved two severely wounded officers, H. Chowins and Thos P Chaffey
