  • Scope and Content
'I must write to Col. Salmon about the stones in church.' [Col. Salmon, who lived in Arthur Street and long retired - had written a letter to the Ampthill News about three carved pieces of stone, then kicking about loose in Ampthill Church, and questioning their origin. They are, in fact, the remains of the head of the churchyard cross, and I later persuaded the Paroc hial Church Council to have them converted - for the sake of their better preservation, into a credence table for the Lady Altar. Peacock's, the Shefford stonernasons, did this, by providing a false fourth section, with base and a top made from a tombstone. ]
