  • Scope and Content
Mrs Last had been a frequent visitor to Old Warden during the late 1920s an early 1930s. Her father died when she was two having been gassed in the war and Mrs Shuttleworth became a benefactor to Mrs Last's mother. Joyce spent summer holidays on the estate, It seems that an aunt may have worked on the estate but this is not entirely clear. Mrs Shuttleworth put Joyce through college. Mrs Last had visited the garden in 1966, by which time it was in a sorry state. Peter Moore asks her about certain features of the garden in an attempt to determine whether they were present in the garden in the 1920s and 30s. He tells Mrs Last about the things that have been recently restored and explains that some areas that had been part of the garden were not included in the area then belonging to and being restored by the county council.
