- Admin/biog historyJohn Roland 'Jack' Herbert was born in Clophill in March 1926, the son of Roland George Herbert (1897-1982) and his wife Evelyn Lily Stimson (1891-1973). Both Jack's parents came from Clophill families. Roland was the son of George Herbert and Elizabeth Braybrooks and had five brothers and four sisters. Evelyn was the daughter of William Stimson and his wife Maria Hart. Of William and Maria's other children only Evelyn's brother Edwin (d 1961) and her sister Clara Ruth (1895-1992) are known to be represented within this collection as the others appear to have died young. According to the census William Stimson had various occupations: agricultural labourer, coal merchant and market gardener. George Herbert was a woodsman. Both families lived in The Strand and then latterly in Back Street, Clophill. Three of Roland's older brothers joined the army: John in 1902, William in 1905 and Ernest probably in 1914. Roland joined the army in 1915. Roland was honourably discharged after being wounded in 1917. Ernest died in captivity on 31 March 1918 aged 23. Jack joined the army in 1944 and was discharged in 1947. In later life he was an active member of the British Legion. Evelyn and Clara inherited their father's estate for life in 1940 and land was acquired in their names in 1955. In 1969 Roland and Evelyn appear to have had a house built at 25 Back Street. Jack also lived in Back Street until the last five years of his life when he went into a nursing home.
