    Transcript from Bedfordshire Mercury 30 December 1843 'Murderous attack on Gamekeeper and Capture of the Poachers'. William Bird, assistant gamekeeper to H Magniac of Colworth House pursued two men running from Alsey Wood. He was beaten with a gun and left for dead. The poachers James Asplin and John Elsom were apprehended the next day.
