  • Scope and Content
Arriving at his master's rope walk at the Fox at 5.45 a.m. he found Thomas Wilds and George Powell making a clothes line. Wilds asked him to fetch the looper and help them finish it off. When it was finished Wilds 'linked it up' and carried it into the shed and hid it, and then went to his work in the hemp shop. Smith and Powell 'went to work to spin a large rope' from the stuff which was left. Later, after their master came to the rope walk and with the help of Wilds he helped to finish off the rope which he remarked 'ain't so heavy as it ough to be' but Wilds insisted that he had spun all the 90 lbs up. Smith told his master of what he had seen in the morning and Wilds, after much questioning and denying, confessed.
