  • Scope and Content
'The feoffees ... are of the opinion the obligations and duties of their trust do not permit them to be parties in the erection of any new bridge or in the enlargement of an old one. And if any alteration be thought convenient to the public, that the expense ought not to fall in any degree upon the funds of a private charity - the present bridge is quite sufficient for all the porposes of the town of Shefford ... the removal of the guard posts ... would very greatly endanger the safety of all foot-passengers - the footway in its widest part being only four feet ... and towards the bridge it becomes much narower ... the projected widening ... being on the same side of the river as the footpath is - the danger to passengers will be still more increased.' Signed by Edmund Williamson, Benjamin Stapleton, William Green, William Long, William Waller and John Godfrey.
