  • Scope and Content
Her husband Robert is the occupier of the Six Bells but 'he was at a daily work at turnip hoeing & absent from home the whole day' she also went out and left her sister Ann Hulet in charge. On returning at seven in the evening she found the house in a state of riot, apparently caused by her sister refusing to serve a party of vagrants, who had been drinking in the house many hours, with further liquor. She asked William Dennis to assist and sent for the constable. Deposition of Ann Hulet. The party came to the house about half past eleven and drank beer 'very peaceable & orderly for some hours, but the evening drawing on, she thought they had beer sufficient & refused to draw them any more'. They became riotous and 'one young man of their company called Plato Smith and his sister Jane, forced themselves into the parlour and disturbed some company that was in it'. At this juncture her sister Sophie Woodham came home and sent for the constable, see QSR1817/421. Also see QSR1817/233.
