Denies taking the cloth on the night of the cricket match, but six weeks later saw some cloths drying before the fire; they seemed to be his wife’s. ‘Last Monday morning I had a quarrel with my wife, I unfortunately in my vexation at her bad behaviour struck her with a warming pan – she swore she would match me for it and therefore, as I really believe, she out of spite made this charge against me’.
