Letter from Lord Grantham (Thomas de Grey) regarding evidence against Riley and Swepson.
  • Date free text
    1821
  • Production date
    From: 1821 To: 1821
  • Scope and Content
'For the Cainhoe Park offence, being merely that of accomplices may be insufficient to convict them ... As I can have no object of personal feeling against the individuals, and only a wish that the neighbourhood be rid of such characters, I can have no objection (if upon further communication with Riley you think the public is likely to be benefitted by the information he can give) to leave you to the exercise of your own discretion in proving for me, to forgo the game prosecution, and for which this will be your authority. If we gan get Swepson punished for a felony and Riley impeached amongst his former associates as an informer we shall do more good to the public at large than by a short imprisonment to both for minor offences ... It will be adviseable to keep the prosecution against Swepson still hanging over him in case of failure in your cause.'
