Examinations and depositions: Thomas Perkins, gamekeeper to Mr Pym, Sandy. At twenty minutes past eleven at night he saw eight or nine men 'some had short sticks and some had poles and some had sacks'. When he asked them what they were doing they replied that they had come for some chestnuts and would not damage the trees. They refused to give their names or residence 'I kept going round them, one of them raised a stick ... I pulled a pistol partly out of my jacket pocket .. they came to see what I had and I went away for assistance. He returned with John Harrodine and Thomas Barnes where he saw one man beating the trees and they had one sack (about three bushels) practically full. I said you promised me not to hurt the trees you must come before the master, they replied we have another party, upon which I whistled - two then ran away, I seized Samuel and William Stonebridge - Samuel squared at me as if to fight - I told him that I would knock him down - Gilbert said that they might as well go quietly .... We took them to Mr Pym's house.' Thomas Barnes gave nearly the same evidence .... Swore to Caleb Marshall being one of the party.
