Examinations and depositions: Information of William Rawson [Ransom], Warden, master of the workhouse; he was near the door of the workhouse when Robert Bunting came in 'he is a lodger in the house, not a pauper - he threw the door violently open and I said to him - Bob do not break the door, upon which he seized me by the collar with the right hand and shook his left hand in my face, a great deal of abuse followed - I did not give him any provocation'. Information of William Wright, Warden, sawyer; he was in the Hare & Hounds, Warden when Mr Mantle the constable came in and gave Robert Bunting in charge to him for assaulting William Rawson. After a short while in custody Robert Bunting wanted to go out and William Wright got up to follow, on getting near the door Robert Bunting turned round and knocked him down Examination of Robert Bunting; who alleges that the charge brought by William Rawson is untrue and done ut of spite but William Wright's charge is true and he is sorry for it. He bears no spite or illwill against either of them. Examination of Samuel Mantle, constable; sent for by William Rawson to take Robert Bunting into custody 'for having kicked up a row in the workhouse'. Samuel Mantle recommended William Rawson to make it up but after going away for a short time he came back and said that Mr Neve had said he was to take Bunting in charge. He went upstairs and found Robert Bunting sitting on his bed. On being asked to go with him he went quietly to the public house where he put him in the charge of William Wright while he went home for ten minutes. He was called back and found a man holding down Robert Bunting on the floor 'after some further discussion and hearing that he had knocked down William Wright - I put both his wrists into the handcuffs. Bunting went to the fire grate and struck the back of the handcuffs violently against the bars and broke the lock - then he threw part of the handcuff into my face - I belive he did it designedly - as he might have thrown the handcuffs elsewhere if he had chosen.'
