    Sir Samuel Ongley of Maidstone was a linen draper in Cornhill, a director of the South Sea Company, Member of Parliament to Maidstone 1713-1715. Settled at Warden about 1690. sheriff of Bedfordshire 1703. Died 1726, aged 80. Unmarried. He was succeeded by his nephew (or great nephew?), Samuel Ongley, who probably wrote the inscription at the front of the volume. He married Anne Harvey, was Member of Parliament for New Shorham 1729-34, and for Bedford 1734-1747. He died in 1747, leaving no children. He was succeeded by a kinsman, Robert Henley, who took the name of Ongley, and was Member of Parliament for Bedford 17654-1761, created Baron Ongley of Old Warden, n the Kingdom of Ireland in 1776. He died in 1785. He was succeeded by his son Robert, second baron, 1771-1814, who was succeeded by his son Robert, 3rd baron, 1803-1877, who died unmarried. On the flyleaf 'Mem, the 13th July 1739: In this memorandum book of Sir Samuel Ongley decd. are several very useful observations relating to Bedfordshire and other estates that were his" Pages 5-8, 35-36 torn out.
