Scope and Content
Watercolour and traces of pencil, depicting a red brick house with sash windows, a path between lawns leading to the panelled front door, and a door in the garden wall to the left leading into a small dwelling or bothy. Titled in ink by the artist to lower margin below image.
The house depicted is situated at Church End, Eversholt. At the time Fisher painted this watercolour the house was owned by Ann Sandys (died 1855), widow of Thomas Sandys, surgeon (died 1816). Thomas lived and worked in London but his father appears to have been John Sandys, who was rector of Eversholt from 1766-1809. After Ann's death the house passed to Thomas' nephew, Samuel, another London surgeon. Samuel retired to the house and appears to have died there in 1878. Some time after that the house became the property of the Duke of Bedford and was then exchanged for the Rectory in 1902. The house was the rectory from 1902 until about 1980 when it returned to being a private residence.
