Stanley Moore was born in Morriston in South Wales in 1924 but was brought up in Lowestoft, Suffolk, the home town of the Moore family, where he was educated at Lowestoft School. During the Second World War he trained as a navigator in the R.A.F. and it was in this capacity that he learned and became interested in meteorology. After the war he became a valuer working for the Board of Inland Revenue and, in 1960, the Revenue moved him and his family from Lowestoft to Luton. In 1975, he became the District Valuer for Luton and, in the following year, the family moved to Sundon Road in Streatley. It was while living here that Peggy, his wife, bought him some basic meteorological equipment and he began keeping detailed daily records of the weather in Streatley, a practice that he continued until his death in 2003. His interest in meteorology grew and he bought slightly more sophisticated equipment and began writing monthly weather reports in 'Proclamation', the magazine of St. Margaret's church, Streatley, where for a time he was churchwarden.
