  • Title
    Notes on house at Deadman's Cross in response to an enquiry in 1970 from the then owner. First records 1728 owned by John Willows; by 1768 it is let to Joseph Cooper and being used as an inn; sold in 1773 to a farmer William Endersby; in 1813 the house was sold to the parish of Haynes to be used as the poorhouse and the land went to the Whitbread family; by 1839 both the land and house belonged to the W.H. Whitbread and the house was described as 'Speed the Plough' public house. It subsequently became the Red Lion.
