Covers Edward Rate who started the trade in Harrold in about 1849 and was accidentally drowned in a tan-pit in 1880; the Manton family who bought his business and later moved to premises that becanme the Harrold Leather Manufacturing Company; Charles Pettit of Pettit & Co; Charles Partridge whose leather factory burnt down in 1901; George Wells whose business was later owned by James Drage and Reginald Dickins Ltd. Explains the leather dressing process & rates of pay in the industry.
