- Scope and ContentHopes what the papers say about Joseph Sydney Yorke quitting the Admiralty are not true, as there is 'no one so proper as him for the office..' While Lord Wellesley and Mr Canning are clever and able orators, the writer questions their influence to attract a sufficient number of adherants to form a party. 'I cannot help feeling that we are now under another power than that which has governed us for these last 51 years ..... but indeed I am so loyal a royal by nature and from princpile that HRH will have my support as long as he maintains the dignity of the crown.' Thanks for the information about Persepolis; admires Lady Lucas' knowledge on the subject. One side of the old pigeon house fell down last Thursday and crushed a lot of shrubs, but fortunately no one was passing. The pigeons flew about for a while, and then returned to their old home. Reference to opera box - 'I think your advances on that score will be as long paying off as the national debt.' Further remarks made. Has heard nothing from Newby lately. Sent Grantham some truffles last week and hopes they arrived in good condition; the season is nearly over. Comments about improvements in the garden - a new turn giving to an old walk. Mention of the Situation in Spain 'whether the acquisition of Cuidad Rodrigo will counter balance the loss of Valencia is beyond my Spanish politics to determine.' 'I am very glad you have a servant to your mind and I am surprised to hear Mr Godsell had been guilty of the violent act you mention.' Alfred [Thomas Alfred Harris] is offered a prebend at York; the yearly value will not pay his journey to take his stall, but the writer rejoices at any steps he makes in his preferrment. Considers the times are becoming very difficult for the clergy of the Church of England. Makes further remarks.
