  • Scope and Content
The weather has picked up yesterday and today, but have had some rainy days lately which have prevented sailing and forced them to take small walks between the showers. Have thoughts of sailing over to French to assist Charles in his voyage to England. Sees from the newspapers that [Prince Jules de] Polignac is in London; pleased that he has escaped without hanging, notwithstanding his infamous conduct, but would as soon he were not in England. Hears that the Goderichs have left their house and taken one of Lady Louisa Cadogan’s at the other side of the common. Not many people here; ‘only Lord & Lady Anglesey and their two daughters whom we know.’ [assumed to be Henry William Paget, 1st Marquis of Anglesey and wife Lady Charlotte, nee Cadogan] The little Duke of Norfolk is to dine today. ‘I have some thoughts of becoming ‘Hereditary Countess Marshal as I think it sounds very well.’ [Possibly means Henry Charles Howard, later 13th Duke of Norfolk]. Had one race last Saturday for what they call the Lady’s Cup and another next Saturday for the H M King William’s Cup. Had a ball the other night which was brilliantly attended, and there is to be an archery meeting for the young ladies dressed in uniform to shoot bows and arrows tomorrow.
