  • Scope and Content
Thanks for venison. Went to the Thomas Cocks's for tea wearing new bonnet, which was much admired for it's simplicity and taste. Mention of a new bookcase, now filled with books. Mrs Colleton is still at Broadstairs, but does not like the bathing. 'Poor Jemima [Pole-Carew, daughter of Reginald Pole-Carew and Jemima, nee Yorke] has been sadly disappointed on her arrival at Calais to find the house where Joe [Joseph, brother of Jemima] lives full of people and picnic parties and jolity of all kinds going on. Her second letter gave rather a better account.' Joe's little girl [assumed to be Jemima Caroline] was very ill for some days but is now better. Jemima talks of coming back on the 30th as there is no inducement for her to stay as she sees little of her brother. The Countess of St. Germans [Harriet Eliot, nee Pole-Carew] had a grand ball last night. Writer thought it a little awkward that the dancing was to be in the room where the late Lady St. German's [Caroline Eliot, nee Yorke, died 1818] full length picture is at the top just where the dancer's would begin. Mention of Karcher and her eyesight.
