'He [Sir John Paterson] entered a frivolous objection to my vote which was soon overruled and at last entered a protest against the compromise between Mr Renton and me, saying it was unprecedented, unconstitutional, unparliamentary and illegal.' 'Everything I said to my Grandfather in Spring 1779 has proved true.'
