Detailed notes about the founding and development of St Andrew's parish Bedford. Its establishment was largely due to the expansion of the town following the Harpur Trust reorganisation in 1873. The Trust's schools became very attractive to Anglo Indians who sent their children home to board and wanted large houses convenient for the schools. The 'Saints' roads were laid out to west of Kimbolton Road and quickly filled up. The new estate was in the parish of St Peter but the population growth meant that the church was not big enough. A committee was formed in the new Saints area including the Venerable F.R. Michell, the former Archdeacon of Calcutta, to raise funds and the first St Andrew's church, an iron temporary structure was built under Archdeacon Michell as Curate in Charge. The church continued as part of St Peter's parish, initially happily but later with serious conflict, until the formation of a new parish of St Andrews was sanctioned in 1915. E xpansion of the parish continued as Putnoe and then Brickhill were developed.
