Scope and Content
Entitled 'A school of fifty years ago', the notes cover the establishment of the school by Miss Hannah Burgess Francis (born c 1859) with the help of her cousin Miss Thompson, initially at 35 Brereton Road; it had moved to 27 Ashburnham Road by 1890. Miss Thompson died by 1914 leaving Miss Francis as sole proprietor and she moved to 43 Ashburnham Road. Domestic arrangements were run by Miss Charlotte Priest, the teacher for the older girls was Miss Legg. The school gave concerts occasionally including a patriotic play 'Britannia Calls' (see Z153/108/2).
